皆神神社に残されている狐の詫び証文、その由来には諸説あるが、一説には、神仏分離後の熊野出速雄神社の初代宮司水上雄風(おかぜ)が、狐つきの女性の手を取って書かせたものと言われている。
また、次のような説も存在する。
ある年、皆神山の麓、平林村の百姓たちの畑が夜な夜な荒らされ、丹精をこめてつくった農作物が根こそぎ盗まれてしまうという日が続いた。そこで、村人たちは夜番を立てて畑を見張っていると、皆神山から降りてきて畑を荒らし、ふたたび皆神山に逃げていく影を目撃した。そこで名主を先頭に山に上り、山伏の頭領に掛け合うと、それは皆神山に住み着いている狐の仕業に違いない、狐をきつく叱りつけるとともに、詫証文を取ってやるから勘弁してやってくれと言われた。実は不心得な修行僧が野荒しをしたのだろうが、大先達は、それを狐の仕業として処理したという。
A FOX’S DEED OF APOLOGY
It is said that the deed was written by a woman who was haunted by a fox, with the help of Okaze Minakami, the first chief priest of Kumano Izuhayao Jinja shrine.
But there is also another story:
A certain year, in a village at the foot of Mt.Minakami, someone intruded into farms and ran away with the crops day after day. While villagers were watching farms at night, they found a silhouette coming from Mt.Minakami, damaging the farm, and running away to the mountain. So they asked the chief ascetic of Mt.Minakami about that figure, and he answered that it was a fox living there. Then he suggested he scold the fox and get the deed of apology from the fox, in return for their forgiveness. The truth was that his pupil did wrong and he protected him by laying the blame at the fox.
